What to Watch Privacy Policy
What to Watch
Effective date: September 18, 2026
1. Information We Collect
What to Watch is designed to minimize data collection. There are **no accounts**, **no sign-in**, and **no photos**.
We may process the following:
- **Catalogue and title data from TMDB:** The app requests movie and TV information (titles, posters, ratings, genres, runtimes, trailers, and “where to watch” providers) from The Movie Database (TMDB) so we can recommend one title. We send TMDB the title identifiers needed for those requests, plus a **region/country code** so streaming-provider results match your market.
- **Region preference:** Your chosen “where to watch” region (or Auto, which uses your device locale). This is stored locally on your device.
- **Local watch history and saved list:** Titles you pick, reject, save, or mark — including title details cached as JSON — are stored only on your device.
- **On-device cache:** A short-lived catalogue cache and cached poster images may be stored on your device so the app loads faster and can work briefly offline.
- **Device/network status (non-personal):** The app checks whether a network connection is available so it can load the catalogue or show an offline screen.
- **Share content you choose to send:** If you tap Share, the device’s share sheet may send a title name/link to an app you pick. That destination is outside this app.
We do not intentionally collect names, emails, photos, payment data, advertising IDs, or other sensitive personal information.
## 2. How We Use Information
We use information only to provide core app features, including:
- Loading a film/TV catalogue and posters from TMDB,
- Picking one title from your mood, length, and genre answers,
- Showing trailers (YouTube) and streaming providers for your region,
- Saving pick history and a watchlist on your device,
- Remembering your region setting,
- Checking connectivity so the app can fetch data or show the offline screen.
3. Data Storage
Pick history, saved titles, region preference, and cached catalogue/images are stored **locally on your device only**.
We do **not** operate user accounts or a backend that stores your history.
Requests to TMDB (and image/trailer hosts they use) happen over the internet. TMDB processes those requests under **their** privacy policy. We do not sell your personal data.
4. Permissions
What to Watch may use:
- **Internet / network access:** Required to load the catalogue, posters, watch providers, and trailers.
The app does **not** request camera, photos/gallery, microphone, location, contacts, or notification permission.
You can restrict network access in your device settings; without it, the catalogue cannot load.
5. Third-Party Services
What to Watch uses the following third-party services, which may process technical data according to their own privacy policies:
- **The Movie Database (TMDB):** Catalogue, metadata, posters, watch providers, and trailer keys. See [https://www.themoviedb.org/privacy-policy](https://www.themoviedb.org/privacy-policy).
- **TMDB image CDN (`image.tmdb.org`):** Serves poster and provider artwork.
- **YouTube (Google):** Opens trailers in the YouTube app or website when you tap Watch trailer.
- **Google Fonts (if fetched at runtime):** May download fonts to display the UI.
- **Streaming services you open:** “Where to watch” may open Prime Video, Hulu, or other provider sites/apps you choose. Those services have their own policies.
This app does **not** use Firebase, crash analytics, advertising SDKs, or Advertising ID.
6. Children's Privacy
What to Watch is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
7. Data Security
We use reasonable technical measures to protect app data, including encrypted API communication (HTTPS) for TMDB and related requests. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your region, you may have rights regarding your personal data. Since app data is stored locally, you can clear app data or uninstall the app to remove local history, saved titles, region settings, and caches at any time.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted with a new effective date.
